Open Vial Policy (OVP)

Under the Open Vial Policy, partially used vaccine vials from outreach or field sessions can be brought back and used in subsequent sessions — but only for eligible vaccines.

✅ OVP Applies
  • Pentavalent
  • Td / TT
  • Hepatitis B
  • bOPV (oral polio)
  • Rotavirus (RVV)

Conditions: vial must be within expiry, VVM not reached discard point, no contamination, cold chain maintained, label intact.

❌ OVP Does NOT Apply
  • BCG (reconstituted — discard after 3 h)
  • Measles / MR (discard after 4 h once opened)
  • JE (discard after 4 h once opened)

These vaccines are reconstituted with diluent and lose potency rapidly after opening. They must never be returned to stock.

Madhya Pradesh note: MP follows the national NIS schedule. Key additions: Vitamin A supplementation every 6 months from 9 months up to 5 years of age. JE vaccine is administered in selected endemic districts only — confirm local district list before administration. PCV was introduced under UIP and is given at 6 weeks, 14 weeks, and 9 months (booster).

Who Should Come

This service is intended for eligible travellers going to countries listed on the official Government of India yellow fever portal. Please consult the current country list on the MoHFW IHR/POE website before visiting, because the list is amended from time to time.

At AIIMS Bhopal, due to limited vaccine availability, priority is given to travellers who produce valid documents showing actual travel to a listed destination country.

Documents Required

Original passport is required under the official public guidance. In addition, AIIMS Bhopal verifies supporting documents related to travel before slotting.

  • Original passport
  • Proof of travel to a listed yellow fever country
  • Supporting documents — one or more of the following:
    • Flight ticket or itinerary
    • Hotel booking in the listed destination country
    • Appointment letter, joining letter, work order, or deputation-related document
    • Official communication from an employer, institution, company, or authority in the destination country indicating the travel and vaccination requirement
Without passport and adequate supporting proof of travel, vaccination slotting may not be processed.

Please Read Before You Visit

  • Yellow fever vaccination is available only on Wednesdays at AIIMS Bhopal IPC Centre.
  • Vaccine stock is limited.
  • Beneficiaries are considered only after document verification.
  • Slotting is done on a first-come, first-served basis at the clinic level.
  • Reaching early improves the chance of same-day vaccination.
  • If you come late, there may not be enough eligible beneficiaries available to open a vial without wastage.

How the Process Works

The official public guidance notes that the vaccination procedure may vary from centre to centre. At AIIMS Bhopal, the following workflow is followed to manage verification, slotting, and limited-dose use.

Check the official country list
Before coming, confirm that your destination country appears on the official MoHFW IHR/POE yellow fever list.
Come on Wednesday
Yellow fever vaccination is offered only on Wednesdays at the IPC Centre, AIIMS Bhopal.
Complete AIIMS registration
Complete the required AIIMS registration and obtain the registration document for clinic processing.
Report at the IPC clinic
Submit your registration paper at the IPC clinic so your details can be entered into the clinic queue.
Document verification
Your passport and supporting travel documents are checked to confirm eligibility and priority.
Slotting by reporting sequence
Eligible beneficiaries are slotted in the order in which they register at the clinic.
Vaccination when vial use is feasible
Because doses are limited and multiple doses may be drawn from a vial, the vial is opened only when sufficient eligible beneficiaries are available, so that wastage is minimized.
Post-vaccination observation
All vaccine beneficiaries are required to wait for 30 minutes after vaccination for observation.
Certificate validity
Your yellow fever vaccination certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for life.
Important: AIIMS Registration and Clinic Slot Entry Are Different

Routine AIIMS registration alone does not complete the vaccination process. After registration, you must report to the IPC clinic and submit your registration paper for clinic-level slot entry.

Why Reaching Early Matters

✓ If you reach early
  • Earlier document verification
  • Better position in clinic queue
  • Higher chance of being grouped in an open vial batch
  • Better chance of same-day vaccination
✗ If you reach late
  • Later slotting in queue
  • Fewer beneficiaries available around the same time
  • Vial opening may not be feasible without wastage
  • Vaccination may have to be deferred

Certificate and Travel Validity

Passengers travelling to or from yellow fever endemic countries are required to possess a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate issued by an authorized vaccination centre. The certificate becomes valid only after 10 days from the date of vaccination. Official public guidance also notes that invalid, incomplete, altered, or defective documentation can lead to quarantine-related issues.

Please plan your vaccination well in advance of travel.

Who Should Not Receive the Vaccine Without Medical Assessment

The official public guidance lists several contraindications and precautions, including severe allergy to egg/chicken/gelatin, pregnancy, infants younger than 9 months, significant immune compromise, acute or moderate illness, thymus-related disorders, and major liver or kidney disease. Final vaccination decisions may depend on risk assessment by the designated centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is yellow fever vaccination available every day at AIIMS Bhopal?
No. This service is available only on Wednesdays at the IPC Centre, AIIMS Bhopal.
What is the most important document I must carry?
You must carry your original passport. The official public guidance specifically lists original passport as a mandatory document.
What other travel proof should I bring?
Please bring supporting proof of travel, such as ticket/itinerary, hotel booking in the destination country, and where applicable, official communication from a source in the destination country showing the need for travel and vaccination.
Is hospital registration enough?
No. After AIIMS registration, you must also report to the IPC clinic and submit your registration paper for clinic-level slotting.
Why am I being asked to come early?

When does the certificate become valid?
The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for life.
Where should I check the country list?
Please check the official MoHFW IHR/POE yellow fever page for the current list of countries, because the list may be amended from time to time.
What happens after vaccination?
You will be asked to remain for 30 minutes of observation after vaccination. If you feel unwell, inform the doctor on duty immediately.
